Hello all who I have neglected for so long. I do not have a good excuse for not keeping up with my blog, unless you count thesis work a good excuse for being busy? I am officially on summer vacation, but it doesn't feel like much of a vacation since I am working here 40 hours a week. For the last few weeks of school I have been working on some word experiments made out of various materials. This is an idea I am experimenting with for thesis next year. All the first year MFA students at MICA participate in a gallery opening in March and I decided to use my numbers from last semester done in my experimental type class. I used the vinyl cutter and with James' help, we got it onto the wall. Here it is!

One of the first assignments of this semester was to design a poster for the New Views 2 design conference happening in London this summer. The poster needed to use graphic design as a means to critique and reflect upon its future. This is my heart. This is my future.

We had to a design a number font in my type class and I think I still had leaves on the brain from the urban forest project. The calendar was inspired by a barometer and I love the idea of a calendar that you can change along with the weather. Baltimore is doing their own version of the campaign and requested submissions from designers and all the MFA grads decided we should participate. For my experimental type class, with the guys from House Industries, we had to create a modular typeface which constists of only a few forms. We were asked to apply our font in some creative way, so I pulled a random headline from cnn.com and spray painted on a plate. This was my first big assignment of the semester... setting metal type by hand and printing out 10 final identical prints. It took me over 6 hours to set the type and another 6 to print, but the setting was slow due to the lack of spacers that were available in the sizes that I was using. I will post the final print after I have the crit on Monday. So far, so good!!

I stumbled across this font, Cotoris, several months ago when I was designing a logo and I thought at the time that this is one beautiful font.
